Mobile marketing has skyrocketed in popularity in a very short amount of time. Less expensive and easier to create and send than email, text messages make it easier for businesses to keep customers informed about new products and services, sales, and other day-to-day information they may need to know about the business.

Short and Sweet (But Still Understandable)

Since you only have 140-160 characters to get your point across, you need to be very savvy in how you do so. With such a small space, you can easily make a mistake by sending messages that don’t make sense or don’t clearly state what you’re trying to say.

Always create messages for mobile campaigns on paper first. Write down what you have to say and then shorten it so it’s short enough to fit, but still understandable. Avoid abbreviating words where possible as this will weaken your credibility and make you appear unprofessional. Get someone else to look at your messages before you send them.

Send Frequency

Sending multiple sms messages each day will make you seem desperate for business. Keep messages to one or two per week unless sending appointment, payment or meeting reminders – send two or three during the week as needed.

Create a text message sending schedule and stick to it. Send messages that are informative and meaningful.

Build Honest, Trusting Business Relationships

Mass text messages are not for you to unload your troubles or announce something that doesn’t mean much to those outside the workplace. Build relationships that result in sales and repeat business by sending out only important information subscribers can really use.

If you fail to build solid business relationships with subscribers, you will see an increase in opt-out responses. To maintain these relationships:

  • Avoid making promises you can’t keep
  • Avoid using slang or offensive language
  • Send only important information – sales dates, reminders, etc.
  • Do not abuse SMS messaging by sending too many messages in a week

Taking the time to craft an SMS marketing campaign can really pay off in increased sales, repeat customers and new subscribers. As more and more people sign-up to receive bulk text messages from their favorite businesses, you should see an increase in the number of people you serve through your business.
